About the History Group
The Moseley Society History Group was founded on 1st October 1985. The Group aims to spread awareness and knowledge of Moseley’s history and encourage the participation of the local community by organising meetings, walks and visits and by undertaking research on local history topics. All members of the Moseley Society are automatically members of the History Group.
The Group has an extensive archive of original documents and photographs from its research and artefacts donated by local people, which make up the Moseley History Collection. Click to see full details.
If you would like to help with our research projects, explore our Collection or conduct your own research into your family history, you are welcome to join us. The History Group has moved, together with The Collection, to the All Services Club, 91 Church Road, Moseley B13 9EA. The Group usually meets to carry out research on Fridays from 11.00 a.m. and you are welcome to visit us but please email us first at moseleyhistory@gmail.com to make an appointment. Many of the evening talks in the Moseley Society Programme are history related. Talks are held most months on Tuesday or Thursday evenings at the Moseley Exchange – 149-153 Alcester Road. See the Public Meetings web page.
History Group’s appearance on BBC Midlands Today
On Thursday 29th June Linda and Graham Richards from the USA visited the History Group to present us with a photograph of Second Lieutenant William Furse which Graham bought in a Stratford-on-Avon antique shop 15 years ago. Permission to copy subject to acknowledgement
The Moseley Society History Group carries out its own research and publishes the results on its website and in booklets, posters and written reports. It also responds to individual enquiries as far as it is able. The History Group grants permission to quote from any of its published research material and any responses to individual enquiries for non-commercial and educational purposes, but only on condition that the History Group is acknowledged as the source of the information used, together with the author where specified, and on the understanding that the History Group cannot guarantee or accept liability for the accuracy of its material. Use for commercial purposes is not permitted unless terms have previously been agreed with the History Group.
Take-down policy
Should there be queries or challenges to any website information, temporary take-down may be arranged. Items in question will then be reviewed by the Moseley History Group in conjunction with the Moseley Society, and a decision taken as to their permanent removal or reinstatement.

A visit to St Chad’s cathedral to present a picture of the cathedral that had been donated by Chris Holloway. The presentation was followed by a very interesting guided tour of the cathedral. (10 January 2020)
A visit to the King Edward’s School WW1 exhibition to see their display focussing on the Battle of the Somme and the 52 Old Edwardians who were killed there. (14 October 2016).
The Armistice Day Commemoration at Brandwood End Cemetery to remember in particular those who died in the Somme campaign, including 2nd Lt Alabaster who is commemorated on the St Mary’s memorial. (13 November 1916).
A visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas (June2016) and other past activities of the History Group.
The Group has also enjoyed a guided visit to view the work of the WW1 artist Richard Nevison at the Barber Institute, a coach trip to the Imperial War Museum in London and a guided tour of the Birmingham Proof House which carries out compulsory statutory testing of gun barrels.
