The Local History Group continually works on a number of projects, some of which are listed below.
New – World War 2 Project
The History Group has just started researching a new project on World War 2 (see here) and would love to hear from any relatives of men commemorated on the St Mary’s WW2 war memorial. See here for further details.
Wintersloe School
The project resulted in a major article on the history of Wintersloe School, compiled with reference to 20 years of Wintersloe School magazines and other materials in our Collection donated to us by a past member of the History Group and pupil at the school, Gordon Sproston, The article looks at the spartan ethos and curriculum of the school and the impact on it of World War I and subsequent changes in societal attitudes. It is enriched by contributions from the family of its only headmaster Howard Fisher and former pupils, Gordon Sproston and J.P. Stevenson. The article can be read here.

Britannic Assurance / Moor Green House
A large collection of Britannic Assurance in-house magazines was recently kindly donated to us by Reg Monk. These magazines give fascinating insights into the life and times of the company and contain very interesting articles on Moor Green House and Estate, the site of Britannic Assurance and the building of the new Chief Office there. World War 1 Project
The World War 1 Project (click to read more) has done considerable work on the stories of men who died in the war and are commemorated on the St Mary’s War Memorial. It also aims to identify other work that has already been done, provide a central data-base hub linking to this research and fill in any gaps not previously covered (for example local conscientious objectors). In order to avoid duplication we need to know what research is being done and what still needs to be investigated. We are therefore keen to hear from any organisation that is undertaking its own research into WWI. This project will continue until the end of 2018 at least.
History of Moor Green Allotments
The Group has recently completed a project on the History of Moor Green Allotments (click to read more). The project produced an official booklet on the history of the allotments, a timeline and web articles showing how allotments developed over the past 250 years, displays and a calendar, in commemoration of Moor Green Allotments’ 40th Anniversary Celebrations.
