In Memory of those killed in 1915
The following articles by Edwina Rees commemorate those whose names appear on the St Mary’s Church war memorial who were killed in action in 1915.
3. Lance-Corporal William Drummond
4. Second Lieutenant G W Field
6. Second Lieutenant D H W Greenway
10. Corporal Joseph Herbert Smith – from Coldbath Lane moved to Talgarth, Breconshire and married a girl from Walsall, who died in 1910 after only two years of marriage. In 1914 Joseph enlisted in the 1st Brecknockshire Battalion of South Wales Borderer Regiment. He was posted to Aden in 1915, arriving there on 3rd July. Immediately on their arrival, the 1st Brecknockshire Battalion were sent on a gruelling march of 25 miles. Joseph died of heat stroke the following day along with many others. Where he was buried is not known.
Note that H.L Pearce is wrongly shown on the memorial as having lost his life in 1915 when he was in reality killed in 1917. See the 1917 page for the article on Private Harold Leslie Pearce.
